About this Attraction

The Nishi Chaya District (西茶屋街, Nishi Chayagai) is the smallest and most tranquil of Kanazawa’s three historical geisha districts. Located near the Ninja Temple (Myoryuji), this compact neighborhood offers a quieter and more intimate glimpse into Kanazawa’s refined cultural heritage. While it doesn’t have the same scale or tourist traffic as Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya retains its Edo-period charm with elegant wooden lattice teahouses, narrow stone streets, and a peaceful atmosphere.

The highlight of the district is the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan Museum, the only building open to the public. This small but informative museum showcases the history of geisha entertainment in the area and displays photographs, instruments, and other cultural artifacts. It also serves as the starting point for free Japanese-language walking tours of the district, which add context and meaning to the beautifully preserved architecture.

The district has a handful of traditional chaya (teahouses) that still operate today, although they are not open to tourists unless invited. However, visitors can enjoy nearby cafes and sweet shops, and the serene environment makes Nishi Chaya ideal for a short, reflective walk. Unlike the bustling Eastern District, this western corner of Kanazawa feels untouched and authentic.

Nishi Chaya is easily reached by a short walk from the Ninja Temple (Myoryuji) or by bus from Kanazawa Station. For travelers seeking a more peaceful, less commercialized cultural experience, the Nishi Chaya District offers a quiet escape into the traditions of old Kanazawa.
