About this Attraction

The Seisonkaku Villa (成巽閣, Seisonkaku) is one of Japan’s finest surviving samurai villas, built in the final years of the Edo Period by a Maeda lord for his mother. Nestled in the southeastern corner of Kenrokuen Garden, this elegant two-story residence is a testament to refined samurai culture, architectural beauty, and filial respect. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to step into the world of the Maeda clan—one of the most powerful feudal families of their time.

The villa features a series of spacious tatami rooms, each carefully preserved and rich in detail. Its highlight is the garden-viewing deck, designed with an uninterrupted panoramic view—a feat achieved by eliminating traditional vertical supports that would have obstructed the scenery. Visitors can admire original painted fusuma sliding doors, woodwork, and rare color combinations once used by nobility.

English and Japanese signage provides cultural insights throughout the villa. While Seisonkaku sits beside Kenrokuen Garden, entry to the villa requires separate admission. However, the villa has its own exclusive entrance leading directly into the garden, offering a seamless cultural experience.

Getting there is simple—just walk from Kenrokuen’s main entrance or from nearby attractions like the 21st Century Museum. Seisonkaku is a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking to connect with the aesthetic legacy of Japan’s samurai elite.
