About this Attraction
Kenrokuen Garden (兼六園) in Kanazawa is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most magnificent landscape gardens, alongside Kairakuen in Mito and Korakuen in Okayama. Once the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle, it was developed by the powerful Maeda clan over nearly 200 years and opened to the public in 1871. True to its name, which translates to “Garden of Six Sublimities,” Kenrokuen embodies spaciousness, seclusion, antiquity, artificiality, abundant water, and expansive views—core principles of Chinese landscape gardening.
Every season offers a new experience. In spring, visitors can enjoy plum blossoms (mid-February to March), followed by cherry blossoms (mid-April), especially along the northeastern streams. Summer brings lush greenery and colourful flowers, while autumn paints the maple trees near Yamazakiyama in shades of fiery red and orange (mid-November to early December). Even in winter, the snow-covered scenery, along with traditional yukitsuri ropes supporting pine branches, creates a serene and elegant atmosphere.
Key highlights include the Kotojitoro Lantern—a symbolic two-legged stone lantern by Kasumigaike Pond—and one of Japan’s oldest fountains, naturally powered by a clever elevation drop. The majestic Karasaki Pine, grown from seed by the Maeda family, elegantly stretches over the pond. Visitors can enjoy scenic teahouses, peaceful trails, panoramic viewpoints, and a charming pedestrian path lined with cherry trees just outside the main entrance. Kenrokuen offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical architecture, and cultural refinement throughout the year.
