Standing proudly in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Ushiku Daibutsu is one of the tallest bronze Buddha statues in the world, reaching an incredible height of 120 meters (approximately 394 feet). Completed in 1993, this monumental statue weighs around 4,000 tons and held the record as the tallest statue in the world from 1993 until 2008.
History & Purpose
The Ushiku Daibutsu was constructed to commemorate the birth of Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) sect of Buddhism, one of Japan’s most widely practised Buddhist traditions.
