About this Attraction
Katori Shrine (香取神宮, Katori Jingū), located in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest and most historically significant Shinto shrines. According to ancient records, it was established as early as 642 BC and is the head shrine of over 400 Katori shrines across Japan, primarily in the Kanto region. It has long been revered as the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Shimōsa Province.
The primary deity enshrined at Katori Shrine is Futsunushi-no-kami, the god of swords, lightning, and military victory, regarded as a general of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. Throughout Japan's history, the shrine has been closely associated with the military class and received patronage from essential figures such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Ashikaga Takauji during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods.
The shrine features several structures of immense historical and cultural value. The Honden (main hall), rebuilt in 1700 during the Edo period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Rōmon (tower gate), also from 1700, displays a plaque written by Fleet Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō. Additional treasures include ancient mirrors, the Koseto Komainu (ceramic guardian dog statues), and centuries-old documents that glimpse the shrine's rich legacy.
Surrounded by a peaceful forest, the shrine grounds provide a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to explore. They offer walking paths, seasonal beauty, and a deep connection to Japan's spiritual and cultural history. Easily accessible from Tokyo, Katori Shrine remains a sacred destination for worshippers and history enthusiasts.
