About this Attraction

Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka's most prominent wildlife sanctuaries, was an unforgettable experience. Nestled between the provinces of Uva and Sabaragamuwa, the park spans an impressive 30,821 hectares (119 sq mi). I was struck by its sheer size and the diverse habitats it encompasses, from grasslands to dense forests. As I ventured deeper into this pristine wilderness, it became clear why Udawalawe is a haven for wildlife, particularly elephants and water birds.

A Glimpse of History

The park was established on June 30, 1972, as part of the Udawalawe Reservoir Project. This initiative aimed to protect the catchment areas and provide a sanctuary for wild elephants. The park’s history is deeply intertwined with the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, which spans 3,405 hectares at full capacity. Another reservoir, the Maw Ara Tank, was added between 1991 and 1998, further enhancing the park’s ecological importance.

The Elephant Paradise

One of the highlights of my visit was witnessing the majestic Sri Lankan elephants in their natural habitat. Udawalawe is renowned for its large elephant population, and it did not disappoint. These gentle giants roamed freely, often gathering near the reservoir to drink and bathe. Observing them in their element was humbling, especially mothers with their calves.

Birdwatcher's Delight

For bird enthusiasts, Udawalawe offers a paradise of avian wonders. I spotted numerous water birds around the reservoir, including painted storks, herons, and egrets. The park is also home to several raptors, and I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a crested serpent eagle perched majestically on a tree.

Exploring the Park's Boundaries

Udawalawe's boundaries are as fascinating as the park itself. To the south lies the Thanamalwila Road, beyond which the Sewanagala Sugar Plantation stretches out. To the southeast, the park connects with Lunugamwehera National Park, creating a vast corridor for wildlife to roam. It’s incredible that this area was once used for shifting cultivation, known locally as chena farming, before being transformed into a sanctuary.

Reservoirs and Landscapes

The Udawalawe Reservoir is the park’s beating heart. Its shimmering waters sustain the park’s wildlife and provide breathtaking views. I spent hours gazing at the reservoir, watching elephants play along the shoreline and birds swoop to catch fish. The reservoir adds a serene charm to the rugged beauty of the park.

A Popular Destination

Today, Udawalawe National Park is one of the most visited wildlife parks in Sri Lanka. As the third most popular park on the island, it attracts tourists from around the globe. Despite its popularity, the park retains a sense of untouched wilderness, making every visit feel like an exclusive adventure.

My Reflections

Exploring Udawalawe National Park was a journey into the heart of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage. From the history of its establishment to the thriving ecosystems it supports, the park is a testament to conservation and biodiversity. For anyone seeking an authentic wildlife experience, Udawalawe is an unmissable destination.
