About this Attraction

The Shinkyo Bridge (神橋, Shinkyō), meaning "Sacred Bridge," stands proudly at the entrance to Nikko's renowned shrine complex. Part of Futarasan Shrine, this vivid red bridge is considered one of Japan's three most beautiful bridges, alongside Kintaikyo in Iwakuni and Saruhashi in Yamanashi.

The bridge was built in 1636 and has a long spiritual and architectural history. It is believed to have existed in some form for centuries before its current iteration. The bridge was closed to the public until 1973, preserving its sanctity. After significant renovations in the late 1990s and early 2000s, visitors can now cross the bridge by paying a small entrance fee.

Set against the backdrop of flowing rivers and lush mountains, the Shinkyo Bridge is a photogenic and symbolic gateway to Nikko's sacred sites. Whether visiting for cultural significance or scenic beauty, it's a must-see on any Nikko itinerary.
