About this Attraction

Rinnoji Temple (輪王寺, Rinnōji) is Nikko’s most historically significant Buddhist temple and a central part of the area’s UNESCO World Heritage designation. Founded in the 8th century by the monk Shodo Shonin, who introduced Buddhism to the region, Rinnoji remains a spiritual and cultural symbol in the heart of Nikko. Its most prominent structure, the Sanbutsudo Hall, is the largest wooden building in Nikko and houses three majestic, gold-lacquered wooden statues representing Buddhist manifestations of Nikko’s mountain deities: Amida Buddha, Senju-Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Kannon), and Bato-Kannon (the Horse-Headed Kannon).

Following a major restoration that concluded in 2019, the Sanbutsudo Hall is now open to visitors, showcasing its grandeur and religious artistry. Opposite the hall, the treasure house features exhibits highlighting the temple’s connection to Buddhism and the Tokugawa shogunate, offering deep insights into Japanese religious history. Behind the treasure house lies Shoyoen Garden, a small but picturesque Japanese-style garden. It is exceptionally breathtaking during the autumn foliage season, typically peaking in early to mid-November when the maple trees surrounding the pond explode in vivid colour.

Rinnoji is conveniently located just a short walk from the famous Toshogu Shrine and can be accessed via a 10-minute bus ride or a 30–40 minute walk from JR or Tobu Nikko Stations. The temple offers an enriching experience for visitors interested in Buddhist culture, Japanese architecture, and serene natural settings. With its deep spiritual roots, impressive sculptures, and seasonal beauty, Rinnoji Temple is a must-visit site that complements any trip to Nikko.
