About this Attraction
Owakudani, meaning “Great Boiling Valley,” is one of Hakone’s most extraordinary and dramatic natural attractions. Formed around 3,000 years ago following a powerful volcanic eruption, this active volcanic valley releases sulfurous steam and hot water vapour, creating a surreal and awe-inspiring landscape. Historically known as the "Grand Inferno," its name was softened when the Meiji Emperor and Empress visited in 1873. Owakudani remains a popular destination today, drawing visitors eager to witness nature’s raw power up close.
Visitors can ascend above the valley aboard the Hakone Ropeway, offering panoramic views from 130 meters above the crater floor. The sight of white volcanic steam rising against the backdrop of Mount Fuji, especially during clear weather, offers one of the best scenic vistas in the Hakone region. The volcanic gases and hot springs maintain a constant temperature near 100°C, and visitors are often reminded of the area's powerful geological forces.
The famous kuro-tamago—black eggs boiled in Owakudani’s sulfur-rich hot springs are a must-try local delicacy. Folklore promises that eating one will add seven years to your life. While the site is generally safe, individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, pregnant women, and young children are advised to exercise caution due to volcanic gases.
Easily accessible via Hakone Ropeway or bus, Owakudani offers a rare glimpse into Japan’s volcanic activity while providing stunning views, cultural traditions, and unique culinary experiences for every traveller.
