Formed over 3,000 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption of Mount Hakone, Lake Ashi (Ashi-no-ko) in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most picturesque natural destinations. Surrounded by lush forests and peaceful hot spring towns, Lake Ashi has become world-famous for its stunning views of Mount Fuji, which can often be seen rising majestically beyond the treetops and beautifully reflected in the lake’s calm waters on clear days.
Some of Hakone's most popular attractions are along the lake’s scenic shores. On the southern end sits the iconic Hakone Shrine, with its vibrant red torii gate appearing to float on the lake’s surface, offering one of the most photographed scenes in the region. The shrine’s traditional structures are tucked into the dense forest, providing visitors with a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
Nearby, the Hakone Detached Palace Garden (Onshi Hakone Park) offers some of the best panoramic views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi. Once a summer retreat for the Japanese Imperial Family, the garden now features beautifully maintained walking paths, scenic viewpoints, and tranquil picnic areas.
Visitors can also explore Moto-Hakone, one of the main towns along the southern shore, known for its boat tours that offer unique perspectives of the lake and Mount Fuji.
