About this Attraction
Tucked away in the lush Yambaru region of northern Okinawa Main Island, Hiji Waterfall offers one of the island’s best nature hiking experiences. Located in a low-density, forest-rich area, this scenic waterfall is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts, nature photographers, and families seeking a peaceful escape from city life.
The journey to Hiji Waterfall begins at a trailhead approximately 2 kilometers inland from the coastal road. After paying a modest entrance fee at the gate, visitors embark on a 1.5-kilometer nature trail, which typically takes around 40 minutes one way. The trail is well maintained, with moderate uphill sections and stairs, making it accessible to most walkers with basic fitness.
One of the trail’s highlights is a suspension bridge that crosses a forested valley 17 meters below, offering a great photo opportunity and a slight thrill for adventurers. The trek ends at the base of Hiji Waterfall, a striking 26-meter cascade surrounded by greenery. The soothing sounds of falling water and the serene ambiance make it an ideal place to rest, meditate, or enjoy a packed lunch before heading back.
