About this Attraction
The Nakijin Castle Ruins (今帰仁城跡, Nakijinjōato) are a striking historical site located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Honto. Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage-designated “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu,” Nakijin Castle offers not only historical depth but also breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere. Unlike other Ryukyuan castles situated in urban areas, Nakijin is surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, giving it a mystical, almost secluded feel that enhances the visitor experience.
Originally built in the late 13th century, Nakijin Castle played a major role during the Sanzan Period (1322–1429), a time when Okinawa was divided into three competing kingdoms: Hokuzan in the north, Chuzan in the center, and Nanzan in the south. Nakijin served as the seat of power for the Hokuzan Kingdom until it was conquered by the Chuzan forces during their campaign to unify the island under the Ryukyu Kingdom. The extensive stone walls, constructed with remarkable craftsmanship and natural curvature, offer a glimpse into the architectural sophistication of the era.
Adjacent to the castle ruins is the Nakijin Village History and Culture Center, a small but informative museum that showcases artifacts discovered on-site, such as Chinese ceramics, ancient coins, and historical documents. Visitors can also explore exhibits on the traditional lifestyle and customs of the local Nakijin community, providing cultural context to the castle’s story.
The Nakijin Castle Ruins are especially beautiful during early spring, when cherry blossoms bloom along the paths, framing the stone walls with pink petals. This blend of history, nature, and legend makes Nakijin Castle a must-visit for those seeking an immersive and reflective experience in Okinawa.
