About this Attraction

Nestled just a short drive from bustling Kandy along the serene Kundasala Road, Galmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya, also known as Galmaduwa Temple, captivated me with its fascinating blend of architectural styles and rich history. My visit to this remarkable structure was a journey into a lesser-known chapter of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, where Buddhist traditions harmoniously coexist with Tamil-Hindu influences.

A Glimpse into History: The Interrupted Vision of a King

The story of Galmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya is as intriguing as its design. Built during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, this temple was never completed. According to historical accounts, the king abandoned its construction upon discovering the nearby Degaldoruwa Cave, redirecting his resources and attention there. This unexpected twist left the Galmaduwa Viharaya unfinished, forever standing as a monument to its interrupted purpose.

A Fusion of Architectural Styles

As I approached the temple, I was struck by its unique architecture—a perfect fusion of Buddhist and Hindu design elements. The structure, known locally as a stone-and-brick pavilion, features a towering gopuram, a hallmark of Tamil-Hindu temple architecture, adding a distinct identity to this Buddhist sanctuary. This blend reflects the cultural coexistence and mutual influence of Sri Lanka’s communities throughout history.

Exploring the Pavilion

The central pavilion is surrounded by a massive wall adorned with a beautifully moulded cornice that overhangs gracefully. Walking around, I noticed five windows on three sides of the outer wall, while the western side featured a slightly larger doorway. The craftsmanship of the semi-circular arches above the doorways and windows was mesmerizing. The entrance door, with its six cusps, stood out as a masterpiece of design.

Inside the Sanctum

Stepping inside, the simplicity of the shrine’s sanctum was humbling. The central feature, the asane (pedestal or throne), stood prominently, awaiting the image it was meant to house. The unplastered brick-domed roof added an earthy and authentic charm, making me feel like I had stepped into a space frozen in time.

Unique Arches and Design Details

One of the Galmaduwa Viharaya's most captivating elements was its arches' design. The semi-circular cusped arches with a keystone were unlike anything I had seen before. The ogee arch at the entrance and the stone-bordered windows further emphasized the unique architectural creativity that went into this structure.

Reflections on the Visit

My visit to the Galmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya was a journey through history and culture. The site’s unfinished nature added a mysterious charm, and its blend of Buddhist and Hindu architectural elements was a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich and diverse heritage.

This hidden gem offers more than just a visual treat—it invites visitors to reflect on the cultural harmony that shaped the island’s history. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or a curious traveller, the Galmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya is a must-visit destination that promises a unique and enriching experience.
