About this Attraction
Growing up in Sri Lanka, Kandy Lake, or Nuwara Wewa, has always held a special place in my heart. Nestled in the heart of Kandy, this serene and historical landmark feels like a timeless connection to our cultural and architectural heritage.
A Walk Back in Time
Every visit to Kandy Lake feels like stepping into a living history book. As I strolled along its shaded trail, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the Walakulu Bamma (Cloud Wall), which partially surrounds the lake. While its unfinished state adds a hint of mystery, the craftsmanship still whispers stories of the past. Imagining how the lake was once the playground of kings and queens, I felt a sense of awe at the vision of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, who transformed paddy fields into this shimmering marvel in 1807.
Legends and Folktales Come Alive
What makes Kandy Lake even more fascinating are the folktales that bring it to life. The tiny island in the middle of the lake, rumoured to have been a secret bathing spot for the king’s harem, always intrigued me. The thought of an underground tunnel linking the palace to this secluded oasis adds a touch of royal drama to the lake's already enchanting presence.
Scenic and Spiritual Harmony
One of my favourite moments at the lake is sitting on a bench and gazing at the Malwatte Temple on the hill, its serene silhouette reflected in the water. The temple, one of the two leading centres of Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka, creates a spiritual connection with the tranquil environment. The gentle ripples of the lake and the soft chants from the temple make for a truly meditative experience.
Discovering Hidden Gems
Another highlight was exploring the Ulpange, the Queen’s Bathing Pavilion, partially submerged in the water. Learning how the British later repurposed it as a police station added a layer of complexity to its history. Similarly, the Diyatilaka Mandapaya, the king's pavilion on the lake, echoed the luxury and sophistication of a bygone era.
A Stroll Through History
The path around Kandy Lake, with its cool breeze and scenic views, is a walk I never tire of. Whether the sight of local vendors selling their crafts or the quiet corners perfect for reflection, every turn of the path offers something new.
Kandy Lake is more than just a body of water—it’s a blend of history, beauty, and culture. As I leave the lake each time, I carry with me a renewed appreciation for the vision of our ancestors and the rich heritage they have left behind.
