About this Attraction

Futarasan Shrine (二荒山神社, Futarasan Jinja) is one of Nikko's oldest and most spiritually significant Shinto shrines. Founded in 782 AD by Shodo Shonin, the monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko, it predates the lavish Toshogu Shrine and is a humble yet powerful spiritual centre. It is dedicated to the mountain deities of Nikko's three sacred peaks—Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho, and Mount Taro. The name "Futarasan" is another reading of Mount Nantai, the tallest of the trio.

The main shrine is centrally located next to Toshogu and Rinnoji Temple, forming a historic trio of Nikko's religious core. Most grounds are free to enter, but a small paid area near the Haiden (offering hall) allows access to a tranquil forest garden, sacred springs, ancient trees, and closer views of the Honden (main entrance). This section offers visitors a peaceful and reflective experience amid Nikko's wooded landscape.

One of the shrine's most iconic features is the Shinkyo Bridge, painted in bright vermilion and stretching over the Daiya River. Located about one kilometre from the main shrine grounds, this sacred bridge is also under Futarasan's jurisdiction and serves as a symbolic entrance to the holy area.

Additionally, two remote Futarasan sub-shrines are located in Okunikko—one at the base of Lake Chuzenji, and the other at the summit of Mount Nantai, accessible only by hiking. The base shrine also marks the trailhead to Mount Nantai, making it a key spiritual site for both worshippers and nature enthusiasts.

With its deep cultural roots, natural serenity, and connection to Nikko's sacred geography, Futarasan Shrine offers a unique blend of history, spirituality, and scenic beauty.
