About this Attraction

Sri Lanka is known for its stunning wildlife, but few places capture the essence of nature’s raw beauty, like Bundala National Park. Located in the Hambantota District, this spectacular wetland sanctuary offers an untamed wilderness that mesmerizes bird watchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike. Having heard of its flamingo gatherings, I was eager to explore this hidden gem of Sri Lanka’s southern province.

Arriving at Bundala – A Gateway to the Wild

My journey to Bundala started early in the morning. As I approached the park entrance, the golden light of dawn spread over the salt marshes, illuminating the shimmering lagoons. Unlike the more crowded Yala National Park, Bundala felt serene and untouched, making it the perfect place to connect with nature without the distractions of large tourist groups.

With my camera and binoculars ready, I hopped onto an open-top safari jeep, eager for what lay ahead. The salty breeze and the wetlands' earthy scent set the stage for an unforgettable adventure.

A Paradise for Birdwatchers

The first thing that struck me was the incredible diversity of birdlife. Within minutes of entering the park, I spotted flocks of Greater Flamingos standing elegantly in the shallow waters. Seeing hundreds of these pink beauties against the backdrop of the blue lagoons was genuinely breathtaking.

The landscape transformed into a paradise of feathered wonders as we drove further. Among the 149 resident and migratory bird species, I was lucky to spot:

  • Blue-tailed Bee-eaters
  • Painted Storks
  • Brown Flycatchers
  • Sandpipers
  • Common Redshanks
  • Lesser Sand Plovers
  • Pelicans and Egrets

The highlight of my birdwatching experience was witnessing a giant flock of flamingos take flight. The sight of hundreds of birds soaring together in perfect synchrony was truly magical—a moment I will never forget.

Encountering the Mammals of Bundala

Bundala is not just about birds but is also home to an impressive variety of mammals. As our jeep meandered through the dry scrublands, I saw a majestic elephant strolling by a lagoon. It was a surreal experience—watching such a massive creature move so gracefully in this tranquil setting.

Other fascinating mammals I encountered included:

  • Spotted Deer grazing in the grasslands
  • Sambar Deer cautiously observes from the distance
  • Wild Boars roaming in small groups
  • Water Buffaloes cooling off in the lagoons

Every moment of the safari felt like stepping into a real-life nature documentary.

Reptiles and Amphibians – The Silent Predators

Bundala is also home to some of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating reptiles. My guide pointed out a mugger crocodile, barely visible beneath the water's surface, waiting patiently for its next meal. A little further along, we spotted a massive Indian python lazily coiled around a tree branch.

The park’s rich wetland ecosystem supports an abundance of frogs, lizards, and turtles, making it a true haven for biodiversity.

The Ever-Changing Landscape of Bundala

One of the most striking aspects of Bundala National Park is its diverse landscape. The park spans 6,216 hectares, covering:

  • Five shallow lagoons
  • Salt pans
  • Interconnecting waterways
  • Golden dunes along the coast

The contrast between the wetlands, grasslands, and coastal dunes creates a unique visual spectacle constantly changing as you move through the park. The shifting scenery kept the safari experience exciting from start to finish.

Best Time to Visit Bundala

If you're planning a visit, the best time for birdwatching is between September and March, when migratory birds flock to Bundala’s wetlands. However, the park remains a fantastic safari destination year-round, with elephants, crocodiles, and other wildlife visible in all seasons.

How to Get to Bundala National Park?

Bundala is 251 km southeast of Colombo and can be reached via multiple routes:

  • From Colombo: Take the scenic coastal road via Galle, Matara, and Hambantota.
  • From Kandy: Travel through the central highlands via Badulla before reaching the southern plains.
  • From Tissamaharama: The park is just 30 minutes away, making it a great alternative to the more crowded Yala National Park.

Once at the park, the only way to explore is via jeep safari, led by experienced guides who ensure visitors get the best wildlife sightings.

Final Thoughts – A Hidden Wildlife Treasure

Visiting Bundala National Park was one of the most peaceful and rewarding safari experiences in Sri Lanka. The combination of rare bird sightings, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes made it an unforgettable journey into nature’s wild beauty.

Unlike some of Sri Lanka’s busier national parks, Bundala offers a more intimate and unspoiled safari experience—perfect for those who genuinely want to immerse themselves in the wonders of wildlife.

Whether you're a birdwatcher, a wildlife photographer, or simply a nature lover, Bundala is a destination that will leave you in awe. I went with my heart full of memories, my camera full of spectacular shots, and a deep appreciation for this hidden wildlife paradise.
