About this Attraction

Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawajō) served as the seat of power for the Maeda Clan, lords of the Kaga Domain, from 1583 until the end of the Edo Period. As one of Japan's most powerful clans, second only to the Tokugawa, the Maeda's stronghold was strategically built in the heart of Kanazawa. Although several fires destroyed the original structures—most recently in 1881—restoration efforts in recent decades have transformed the site into a historical and architectural highlight of the city.

The castle's Ishikawa-mon Gate, dating back to 1788, remains a symbol of resilience and elegance, facing the renowned Kenrokuen Garden. Since the 1990s, Kanazawa Castle has undergone ongoing reconstruction using traditional Edo-era craftsmanship. Key buildings, such as the Gojukken Nagaya (long storehouse) and Hishi and Tsuzuki Yagura (turrets), were restored and opened to the public in 2001. These interior spaces house informative displays on historical carpentry and construction techniques.

Visitors can also explore newer reconstructions such as Kahoku-mon Gate and Nezumita-mon Gate, both of which are open and free to enter. In 2015, the tranquil Gyokuseninmaru Garden, featuring a central pond and walking paths, was restored and is freely accessible.

Kanazawa Castle Park is situated just across from Kenrokuen and is easily accessible via the Kanazawa Loop Bus or Hokutetsu buses departing from Kanazawa Station. Whether you're interested in feudal history, traditional building methods, or scenic garden walks, Kanazawa Castle offers a balanced and enriching experience in the heart of the city.
