About This Activity

Located in the scenic Kinugawa region of Nikko, Ryuo Valley (龍王峡) offers a spectacular hiking experience shaped by ancient volcanic activity. Named after the mythical “Dragon King,” the valley’s winding, jagged terrain is said to resemble a dragon twisting through the land. Over 22 million years ago, a massive volcanic eruption sculpted this breathtaking landscape, leaving behind massive, uniquely shaped rocks and towering cliff walls that now define the dramatic gorge carved by the Kinugawa River.

The Ryuo Valley Hiking Trail stretches approximately 7 kilometres and offers a moderate hiking adventure through dense forests, steep ravines, and waterfalls. Along the trail, hikers are treated to panoramic views of emerald waters, natural rock formations like “White Dragon Rock,” and a series of scenic bridges. The trail also passes by Ryuo-kyo Station, making it highly accessible for travellers using the Tobu Railway line.

The best times to visit Ryuo Valley are in late spring, when the forest is lush and green, and in autumn, especially from late October to early November, when vibrant fall foliage blankets the valley in hues of red, orange, and gold. The hike typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the route and rest stops.

With free access and a trail suitable for most active travellers, Ryuo Valley is a hidden gem that showcases Nikko’s natural beauty beyond its famous temples. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast, a nature photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful escape into the wild, Ryuo Valley Hiking offers a one-of-a-kind adventure that’s both visually and spiritually rewarding.
