About This Activity

Nestled at the foot of Mt. Nantai at an elevation of 1,269 meters, Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖) is one of Japan’s highest natural lakes and a breathtaking hiking destination in Nikko National Park. Formed around 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, this crater lake offers a perfect blend of natural history, scenic beauty, and cultural charm. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the lake became a favoured retreat for foreign dignitaries, with summer villas and embassies lining its shores—some of which can still be visited today.

The 25-kilometre hiking trail encircling the lake provides an immersive journey through Nikko’s stunning alpine landscapes. The course is relatively flat, making it suitable for most fitness levels, and it can be walked in sections for shorter hikes. Hikers are treated to panoramic views of the lake, Mt. Nantai, waterfalls, lush forests, and serene shorelines. In early summer, blooming azaleas dot the trail with bursts of pink and white, while autumn transforms the area into a fiery wonderland of red and gold foliage.

Ideal for a full-day nature escape, the Lake Chuzenji trail also connects to other key attractions like Kegon Falls, Chuzenji Temple, and scenic viewpoints such as Hangetsuyama. With its peaceful environment, rich biodiversity, and seasonal beauty, this trail is a favourite for both casual walkers and nature photographers. Whether you’re seeking solitude, scenic picnic spots, or a deep dive into Japan’s volcanic past, Lake Chuzenji hiking delivers a tranquil yet rewarding outdoor experience.
