About this Attraction
Located in Saga Prefecture on the northwestern coast of Kyushu, Karatsu is a charming coastal city renowned for its rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Known for its Karatsu Castle, scenic beaches, and centuries-old pottery traditions, Karatsu offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Japan, free from the crowds of major tourist hubs.
One of the city’s highlights is Karatsu Castle, perched along the coastline with sweeping views of Nijinomatsubara Pine Grove and Karatsu Bay. The castle, originally built in the early 1600s, features a reconstructed keep that now houses a museum detailing the region’s samurai heritage. The surrounding park is gorgeous during cherry blossom season in spring and the colourful foliage of autumn.
Karatsu is also world-famous for Karatsu-yaki, a type of pottery that has been crafted here for over 400 years. Visitors can explore local pottery studios, participate in hands-on workshops, and shop for one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces that reflect the region’s exceptional craftsmanship.
The city comes alive in early November during the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, one of Kyushu’s most dynamic cultural events. This UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event features massive decorative floats (hikiyama) paraded through the streets in celebration of tradition, community, and good fortune.
Nature lovers will appreciate the Nijinomatsubara, a five-kilometre pine forest along the coast, perfect for peaceful walks or scenic bike rides. Nearby Nanatsugama Caves, formed by volcanic activity, offer dramatic cliffside views and boat tours during the warmer months.
Easily accessible by train from Fukuoka (just over an hour away), Karatsu is a perfect day trip or weekend getaway destination. Whether you're drawn by history, craft, nature, or festivals, Karatsu delivers a uniquely authentic Kyushu experience.
