Mount Tsukuba | Ibaraki
About This Activity
Located at the northern end of Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture, Mount Tsukuba (筑波山 | Tsukuba-san) stands 877 meters (2,877 feet) and is one of Japan's iconic mountains. Unlike many Japanese peaks, Mount Tsukuba is non-volcanic, formed from granite and gabbro, which gives it its distinct structure and rich natural surroundings. The mountain is especially famous for its double peaks — Nyotai-san ("fe" ale body", "77 m) and Nantai-san ("ma"e body", "71 m) — symbolising harmony between male and female spirits. These peaks offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Kantō Plain, with clear-day sights of Tokyo, Lake Kasumigaura, and Mount Fuji.
Mount Tsukuba holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. According to ancient Shinto legends, the mountain is home to the deities Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, the sacred progenitors of the Japanese people. The Tsukubasan Shrine, located at the mountain's summit, remains a popular pilgrimage site and a destination for festivals, weddings, and traditional rituals promoting marital harmony.
Visitors can ascend Mount Tsukuba via multiple hiking trails such as the Miyukigahara Course and Shirakumobashi Course, or choose a more relaxed ascent using the Mount Tsukuba Cable Car or Ropeway. At the summit, tourists can enjoy local food stalls, purchase souvenirs, and experience the unique toad oil (がま油), a traditional remedy.
In addition to its natural beauty and spiritual heritage, Mount Tsukuba is also famous for its mandarin orange orchards, which are grown along its thermal belt. Whether hiking, sightseeing, or exploring its rich cultural history, Mount Tsukuba | Ibaraki offers an unforgettable experience for domestic and international travellers.
