About this Attraction

In the tranquil hamlet of Meegolla within the Walapane Divisional Secretariat, Golumale Stream is genuinely a hidden wonder waiting to be discovered. My visit to this serene location was magical, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and geological marvels.

A Journey Through Scenic Landscapes

My adventure began with a scenic drive along the Udupusellawa road from Walapane. The route was a visual delight, passing through charming hamlets, lush forests, and sprawling paddy fields. The closer I got to Dambagolla junction, the more I felt the tranquillity of the countryside wrapping around me. After about 11 kilometres, I turned onto the picturesque Madulla road, where a small handwritten signboard directed me to Golumale Stream.

As I approached, the sounds of flowing water and rustling leaves welcomed me, setting the stage for an immersive experience in nature’s lap.

The Mesmerizing Rock Formations of Golumale Stream

Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the unique rock formations of Golumale Stream. The Kuda Oya, a gentle yet persistent force of nature, has carved its way over centuries, shaping the smooth sandstone bed into a mesmerizing pattern of large and small cavities.

The rocky landscape, bathed in sunlight, glowed with earthy tones, creating a beautiful contrast against the clear, flowing water. I traced the natural grooves with my fingers, amazed by the power of erosion that sculpted this masterpiece over thousands of years.

Sitting by the edge, dipping my feet into the cool, refreshing water, I couldn’t help but admire the peaceful atmosphere. The gentle gurgling of the stream and the occasional chirping of birds added a soothing melody to the surroundings.

A Place Steeped in Ancient History

What makes Golumale Stream even more intriguing is its historical significance. I learned that this area was once home to King Walagamba’s palaces, Uda Maligaya and Yati Maligaya. Though now hidden beneath dense jungle, the thought of ancient ruins nearby added a sense of mystery and awe to the visit.

It was fascinating to hear how the names Uda Medura and Yati Medura evolved from these royal palaces, reflecting the deep cultural roots of this land. Walking through the surrounding area, I couldn’t help but wonder about the stories and secrets buried beneath the forest floor.

A Geological Wonder

The sandstone bed of Golumale Stream is a testament to Sri Lanka’s geological past. As I ran my hands over its surface, I imagined a time when ancient rivers or seas once flowed here, depositing sand that eventually solidified into rock.

The smooth textures, intricate patterns, and golden hues of the sandstone made this place feel like a natural art gallery, with every rock telling a story of time and transformation.
