About this Attraction

Tucked away in the Jaffna Peninsula, Chundikulam National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most underrated yet breathtaking natural sanctuaries. Formerly known as the Chundikulam Sanctuary, this stunning expanse of mangrove swamps, coastal lagoons, and dense forests was designated a national park in 2015, combining multiple surrounding forests to create a larger protected zone.

As a nature enthusiast and an avid wildlife observer, visiting Chundikulam National Park was an unforgettable experience, offering close encounters with diverse bird species, glimpses of elusive mammals, and breathtaking landscapes that seemed untouched by time.

A Journey to the North – Getting to Chundikulam

Reaching Chundikulam felt like a journey into Sri Lanka’s untouched wilderness. The park lies about 100 km from Jaffna, and the drive took me approximately 2.5 hours through scenic coastal roads, rural villages, and salt flatsSeeing how the landscape shifted from arid, dry scrublands to lush greenery as I approached the park was fascinating.

For those travelling from Colombo, the journey is much longer—around 325 km, but it can be managed by taking a domestic flight to Jaffna or embarking on a road trip. The long journey is worth it, especially for those who appreciate off-the-beaten-path destinations.

First Impressions – A Paradise for Birdwatchers

When I entered Chundikulam National Park, I was greeted by the sight and sound of hundreds of birds—a birdwatcher’s paradise unlike any other.

Mangrove-fringed lagoons stretched into the horizon, providing a perfect habitat for migratory and endemic birds.
Flamingos waded gracefully through the shallow waters, their pink reflections dancing on the still surface.
I spotted painted storks, Eurasian spoonbills, black-tailed godwits, and black-winged stilts coexisting in this thriving ecosystem.

Such a diverse range of birds in one place was mesmerizing. Every turn in the park revealed a new avian species, some feeding, others flying overhead, and a few resting on tree branches, watching over their watery kingdom.

Wildlife Encounters – The More Elusive Residents of Chundikulam

Although Chundikulam is best known for its birdlife, it is home to an incredible variety of wildlife.

I was lucky enough to spot a few deer grazing near the water’s edge, cautiously observing my presence before disappearing into the nearby forest.
The mugger and saltwater crocodiles were seen sunbathing near the mangroves. These majestic yet intimidating creatues blended perfectly with their surroundings.
While leopards and sloth bears are said to inhabit the park, these elusive creatures remain hidden, their shy nature making them almost impossible to spot.

One of the most exciting moments was seeing fresh leopard paw prints on a muddy trail, proof that these incredible predators roamed the area freely, untouched by human interference.

The Unique Ecosystem of Chundikulam

Chundikulam National Park boasts a stunningly diverse ecosystem featuring:

Mangrove forests – Acting as a natural barrier against coastal erosion, these dense green forests create an essential habitat for aquatic life and nesting birds.
Seagrass beds – These nutrient-rich beds sustain fish populations and support marine biodiversity.
Coastal lagoons – Teeming with crabs, fish, and amphibians, the lagoons serve as a feeding ground for wading birds and crocodiles.

What struck me the most was the absolute peace and tranquility—Chundikulam was untouched, raw, and a haven for wildlife.

When to Visit – The Best Time for a Magical Experience

November to February – The best time to visit Chundikulam, especially for birdwatching. The dry season brings an influx of migratory birds, and the weather is pleasant for trekking and wildlife safaris.
April to September – The monsoon season turns the park into a lush, rain-soaked wilderness, but the trails can be muddy and difficult to navigate.

I visited in January, and it was the perfect timeclear skies, abundant birds, and comfortable weather for exploring.

A Conservation Success Story & Future Challenges

Chundikulam National Park has a complex history. It was a restricted military area during Sri Lanka’s civil war. Today, it stands as a symbol of conservation and resilience.

Efforts to protect its fragile ecosystem are ongoing, with park rangers working tirelessly to preserve the area’s biodiversity.
However, deforestation, illegal poaching, and climate change challenge its long-term sustainability.

Visiting Chundikulam felt like stepping into a world where nature thrives untouched, and we must continue to protect this incredible sanctuary.
