Having always been fascinated by marine biodiversity, I finally had the chance to explore this underwater paradise—an experience that left me in awe of nature’s wonders.

A Sanctuary of Marine Life: My First Impressions

As I arrived at Hikkaduwa Marine National Park, I was immediately drawn to the crystal-clear waters and gentle ocean breeze. This park spans 101.6 hectares and is one of only three marine national parks in Sri Lanka. The moment I set foot on the sandy shores, I knew I was about to witness something extraordinary.

I learned that the park’s journey to becoming a national treasure was just as fascinating as its marine life. Initially designated as a wildlife sanctuary, it was later upgraded to a nature reserve, and in 2002, it became a marine national park. This transformation reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to preserving its underwater ecosystems, something I sincerely appreciated as I prepared for my snorkelling and diving adventure.

Exploring the Vibrant Coral Reefs: A World Beneath the Surface

Stepping into the water, I was instantly transported into a colourful underwater world. Hikkaduwa Marine National Park is home to 60 species of coral and over 170 species of reef fish. The variety was mesmerizing—from Staghorn and Elkhorn corals to Brain and Cabbage corals, the reef was alive with movement and colour.

As I snorkelled over the reef, I encountered schools of vibrant fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Some darted between the coral branches, while others swam gracefully in the open water. The reef was a living masterpiece, each coral formation adding a unique texture and hue to the landscape.

For those who love marine exploration, Hikkaduwa Marine National Park is a dream come true. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced diver, the shallow reef (about 5 meters deep) makes it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Encounters with Sea Turtles and Dugongs

One of the highlights of my visit was seeing sea turtles up close. Hikkaduwa is famous for its resident turtles, and I was lucky enough to swim alongside a majestic Green Sea Turtle. Watching this gentle creature glide effortlessly through the water was an unforgettable experience.

The park is also home to Dugongs, rare marine mammals that resemble sea cows. Though I wasn’t fortunate enough to spot one during my dive, I heard stories from the locals about these elusive creatures making occasional appearances. The presence of sea turtles, Dugongs, prawns, crabs, and shrimps makes Hikkaduwa a thriving ecosystem.

Best Time to Visit: A Seasonal Paradise

Timing is key when visiting Hikkaduwa Marine National Park. I was advised that the best time to visit is from November to April when the sea is calm and the visibility underwater is excellent.

During the southwest monsoon season (May to October), the sea can be rough, and the visibility decreases. Plan your visit during the dry season if you want to enjoy snorkelling, diving, and exploring the reef fully.
