Watch native birds | Maldives

  • Bird Watching

About This Activity

The Maldives is not just about turquoise waters and sandy beaches—it’s a hidden gem for birdwatching enthusiasts. During my visit, I explored some serene nature parks that offered a unique opportunity to connect with the avian diversity of this tropical paradise.

Why the Maldives is a Birdwatching Haven

Though the Maldives is one of the smallest countries in Southern Asia, its rich ecosystems provide a habitat for around 144 bird species, some native and others migratory. Among these, only a few species breed locally, but their diversity makes it an exciting destination for bird lovers.

The country’s location in the Indian Ocean, with its unique geography of 1,192 islands spanning 823 km, offers a remarkable backdrop for birdwatching. The lush greenery of certain atolls and the secluded nature parks are the perfect spots to observe these feathered wonders.

Bird Species I Spotted

The variety of birds I encountered was impressive, ranging from herons to terns. Among the highlights were:

  • Grey and Striated Herons: Graceful and commonly seen near the water.
  • White-breasted Waterhen: Active and often seen darting through the vegetation.
  • Terns: Including Black-naped, Bridled, Greater Crested, Lesser Crested, Saunders’s, and Sooty Terns.
  • Noddies: Brown and Lesser Noddies were easy to spot near the shores.
  • Western (Asian) Koel: Known for their distinct calls.

Exploring Southern Atolls

I took a flight to Gan in the Addu Atoll, which is about an hour from Malé. This southernmost group of atolls is connected by causeways, making it easy to explore. Here, I had the chance to spot rarer species like:

  • White-tailed Tropicbirds: Nesting in the southern atolls, they were a spectacular sight with their long tail feathers.
  • Lesser Frigatebirds: Majestic in their soaring displays.
  • Common White Tern: Particularly abundant in Gan.

Best Time for Birdwatching

Birdwatching in the Maldives is great year-round, but certain migratory species, like the Flesh-footed Shearwaters (April), add seasonal highlights. Early mornings and late afternoons were the best times to catch these birds in action.

Activities Beyond Birdwatching

Many nature parks offer more than just birdwatching. I enjoyed a peaceful canoe ride through the mangroves, which provided a closer look at the birds in their natural habitats while soaking in the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.
