About this Attraction

During my visit to the charming hill city of Kandy, a trip to the Ceylon Tea Museum at Hantane was an unforgettable highlight. Located just three kilometres from the city, the museum was easily accessible with a well-maintained motorable road. As we arrived, ample parking and the picturesque surroundings immediately set the tone for a relaxing and enriching experience.

Immersing in the History of Tea Production

Walking into the museum, I was struck by the meticulous layout across its four levels, each offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s illustrious tea heritage. The ground and second floors showcased fascinating vintage machinery once used in tea production. These relics of a bygone era, with detailed descriptions, gave me a deeper appreciation for the evolution of tea manufacturing.

The first floor was home to a well-curated library and a theatre with audiovisual facilities. I read books and learned more about the pioneers of Sri Lanka's tea industry, such as James Taylor and Thomas Lipton. The audiovisual presentation was a captivating narrative about the journey of Ceylon tea—from the plantations to the global market.

Exploring the Tea Outlets and Cafe

The third floor of the museum was a tea enthusiast’s paradise. It featured tea sales outlets where I could sample and purchase premium brands of Ceylon tea, such as Basilur, Mlesna, Zesta, and more. Browsing the selection, I couldn’t resist picking up a few aromatic blends and tea-themed souvenirs to bring a slice of Sri Lanka back home.

The top floor was undoubtedly my favourite—a tea café with breathtaking views. With a steaming cup of tea, I gazed at the panoramic vistas of Kandy city, framed by the majestic Hunasgiriya, Knuckles Range, and Matale hills. The serenity of the surroundings and the rich flavour of the tea created a perfect moment of bliss.

The Art of Tea Tasting

One unique experience was participating in a tea-tasting session at the café. Guided by a tea expert, I learned how to assess different tea varieties' colour, aroma, and flavour. I even attempted the distinctive slurping technique to fully savour the infusion—a fascinating skill that tea masters have honed for centuries.

A Blend of Knowledge and Culture

The museum’s library was another treasure trove of history, featuring old photographs, manuscripts, and documents that chronicled the growth of Sri Lanka’s tea industry. Seeing the pictures of tea plantations and early planters made me feel connected to the deep-rooted legacy of Ceylon tea. The artefacts and stories brought the history to life, making it more than just a museum visit—it was a cultural journey.

A Must-Visit Destination

Before leaving, I took a final walk around the beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding the museum, adorned with various tea plants. Reflecting on my visit, I realised how much I had learned and appreciated about Ceylon tea and its integral role in Sri Lanka's identity.

If you are in Kandy, I recommend visiting the Ceylon Tea Museum. It’s an immersive experience that blends history, culture, and the simple joy of sipping a perfect cup of tea amidst stunning scenery.
