About this Attraction

My visit to Yapahuwa Rock Fortress was like stepping back to an era of kings, battles, and ancient splendour. Tucked away in the Wayamba region, a short distance from the Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road, Yapahuwa isn’t as famous as its counterpart Sigiriya, but it more than makes up for it with its unique charm, rich history, and breathtaking views.

First Impressions: A Fortress in the Sky

The towering 300-foot rock of Yapahuwa greeted me with its imposing presence as I approached the site. It felt like the rock was guarding its secrets, surrounded by lush greenery, just as it once guarded the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha during the 13th century. The fortress was once the capital of Sri Lanka under King Bhuvanekabhu I, and I could almost imagine its grandeur during its heyday.

Climbing the Ornamental Stairway

The highlight of the fortress is undoubtedly its ornamental stairway, which is a masterpiece of medieval Sri Lankan architecture. As I ascended the intricately carved steps, I couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship. Each step was adorned with carvings of dancers, musicians, and the iconic Yapahuwa lions that stand as sentinels, guarding the remnants of the palace above.

The narrowness of the steps added a sense of adventure and intrigue, as they were cleverly designed to slow down attackers in ancient times. Walking the same path that royalty and warriors once tread felt surreal.

Exploring the Summit

Reaching the summit of Yapahuwa was both a physical and emotional reward. The view from the top was breathtaking, with rolling hills, sprawling jungles, and serene countryside stretching as far as the eye could see.

At the summit, I found the remains of a stupa, a Bodhi tree, and small caves that Buddhist monks once used. The tranquillity of the place was almost meditative, with the gentle breeze carrying whispers of the past. A small natural water tank near the peak added to the serene atmosphere.

Discovering the History

Yapahuwa’s history is as fascinating as its architecture. It served as the capital of Sri Lanka during the 13th century and housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha for 11 years. The fortress was meticulously designed to defend against South Indian invaders, and remnants of its defensive strategies, including its moat and towering walls, are still visible today.

However, the fortress declined after the Tooth Relic was taken to South India. Monks transformed it into a monastery, and to this day, their presence among the ruins gives Yapahuwa a sense of living history.

The Unique Yapahuwa Lions

One of the most captivating features of Yapahuwa is the Yapahuwa Lion sculpture, which resembles a Chinese lion and is even featured on Sri Lanka’s Rs. 10 currency note. Its intricate design and imposing presence make it a symbol of the kingdom’s strength and artistry.

A Glimpse into Yapahuwa's Cultural Ties

Recent archaeological discoveries at Yapahuwa have revealed evidence of diplomatic ties with China, including celadon pottery, Chinese coins, and other artefacts. These findings hint at Yapahuwa’s role as a defensive stronghold and a hub of cultural and economic exchange.

Practical Tips for Visiting Yapahuwa

Final Thoughts

Yapahuwa is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Walking through its ruins, climbing its storied stairway, and standing at its summit, I felt a deep connection to the past and the people who once called this fortress their home.

While Yapahuwa may not have the fame of Sigiriya, its tranquil atmosphere and rich history make it an unforgettable experience. If you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful retreat steeped in culture, Yapahuwa is a must-visit destination that promises to captivate and inspire.
