About this Attraction

Nestled in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, Victoria Park welcomed me with its serene atmosphere and bursts of vibrant colours. Named in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, this 27-acre garden felt like stepping into a floral wonderland. The crisp mountain air added a magical touch to the beautifully maintained gardens.

A Historic Gem in Bloom

As I strolled through, I couldn’t help but marvel at the history surrounding this park. Originally a research field for the Hakgala Botanical Garden, it became a celebrated public garden during colonial times. Its legacy lives on in the meticulous layout and vibrant flora, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring Nuwara Eliya.

Floral Symphony and Feathered Friends

The sheer variety of blooms took my breath away—hydrangeas, azaleas, and petunias painted the pathways with colour. At the same time, rare endemic plants like the Sri Lanka White Eye added a touch of exclusivity. March to May and August to September seemed ideal times to witness this natural splendour.

Birdsong filled the air as I ventured further. With my binoculars, I caught glimpses of exotic species like the Indian Blue Robin and the Pied Thrush. It was a delight for both the avid birdwatcher and the casual nature lover in me.

Fun for All Ages

Another highlight was a visit to the Children’s Park. The miniature train chugging along its 20-minute loop around the park was a hit among families and offered a whimsical view of the surroundings. Nearby, a serene lake added to the park’s charm, with swan-shaped paddle boats gently gliding across the water.

Moments of Relaxation

Benches tucked under the shade of towering trees provided the perfect spots to sit back and take in the scenery. Families enjoyed picnics while couples strolled hand in hand, soaking up the tranquil vibe. I treated myself to a refreshing drink from one of the local vendors and savoured the peaceful ambience.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Victoria Park is easily accessible anywhere in Nuwara Eliya, with ample parking and marked entrances. Open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the park charges a modest entry fee—300 Sri Lankan Rupees for adults and 150 for children. Comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen are necessary to make the most of the visit.

Victoria Park felt like an oasis of tranquillity, offering a blend of history, natural beauty, and family-friendly activities. My time there was nothing short of rejuvenating, leaving me with cherished memories of a garden that seemed to have a soul of its own.
