About this Attraction
I had always been intrigued by Ussangoda National Park. The tales of red earth, ancient legends, and mysterious landscapes seemed almost too surreal to be true. So, on a sunny morning, I set off down Sri Lanka’s southern coast, determined to witness this peculiar natural wonder with my own eyes.
The Journey Begins: A Scenic Southern Drive
The drive along the Colombo–Kataragama road was breathtaking. The closer we got to Ambalantota, the landscape transformed—lush greenery gave way to open, rugged terrain. Just as promised, a modest sign for Ussangoda appeared by the roadside, marking the start of the final leg of our journey.
After a few minutes of winding uphill travel, I saw a scene unlike anything I had seen in Sri Lanka.
First Impressions: A Martian Landscape in Paradise
Stepping out of the car, I was momentarily disoriented. The soil beneath my feet was crimson-red, contrasting sharply with the vivid blue sky and green coastline in the distance. The ground was dry and cracked in places, with patches of moss and low-lying vegetation scattered unevenly across the surface.
The air was crisp, carrying a faint, earthy aroma mixed with the salty tang of the nearby ocean. As I gazed across the landscape, the ground’s unusual texture and colour gave it a Martian-like appearance, making me feel like I had stepped onto another planet.
The Legends Come Alive: Echoes of the Ramayana
As we walked across the open land, our guide—a local from a nearby village—began recounting the mythological tales connected to Ussangoda.
According to Hindu legend, this was one of the sites where King Ravana used his Pushpaka Vimana—an ancient flying chariot—to travel across his kingdom. The plateau's wide, flat surface certainly looked like an ideal landing strip.
Another tale told of Lord Hanuman, who had set the ground ablaze with his flaming tail during his battle with Ravana’s forces. The charred, black stones and scarlet soil around us were said to be the scars of that fiery battle. I bent down to touch the soil; it was dry and brittle, almost like burnt clay—an eerie physical reminder of the mythic past that supposedly unfolded here.
Scientific Marvel: The Mystery of the Soil
Intrigued by the soil’s appearance, I asked our guide about its composition. He explained that Ussangoda sits on a serpentine rock formation—one of only a few found in Sri Lanka. The soil here has high concentrations of heavy metals, making it toxic to most plants.
Looking around, I noticed the vegetation seemed to grow in isolated clusters, almost as though the plants themselves were unsure where it was safe to thrive. This unique ecosystem, while sparse, attracts researchers and nature lovers alike.
The View from the Cliff: A Spectacular Coastal Panorama
The scenery transformed as we made our way to the plateau's edge. The rugged red surface ended abruptly on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Standing there, with the waves crashing far below, I felt a profound sense of connection to both nature and legend. The endless horizon, the briny sea breeze, and the stories echoing in my mind made this moment unforgettable.
Encounters with Wildlife: A Surprise Amidst the Barren Terrain
Despite the harsh soil conditions, life persists in Ussangoda.
I was delighted to spot several species of birds flitting about, seemingly unbothered by the soil's toxicity. The guide pointed out a pair of thick Indian knees standing camouflaged against the reddish ground.
Even more surprising were the tiny wildflowers—delicate purple blooms that had managed to take root in the cracks of the soil. Nature, as always, finds a way.
The Ramayana Trail: A Spiritual Connection
As the sun began to dip lower, we visited the Hindu shrine recently becoming a popular pilgrimage site along the Ramayana Trail.
Devotees believe that Lord Hanuman’s fiery vengeance left this land scorched, and they visit to pay respects to the gods involved in the epic tale. Watching the flickering oil lamps and hearing the soft chants of prayer, I realized that Ussangoda is more than just a geological curiosity—it’s a place where mythology and reality intertwine.
A Sunset to Remember
As we prepared to leave, we lingered a little longer by the cliff’s edge. The sun dipped toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and crimson—a perfect mirror of the ground beneath our feet.
The crimson soil seemed to glow in the twilight while the Indian Ocean shimmered like molten gold. It was the kind of sunset that imprinted itself on your soul.
Tips for Future Visitors

Final Thoughts: A Place Where Earth Meets Legend
Visiting Ussangoda National Park felt like stepping into a living myth. The peculiar crimson soil, the stories of Ravana and Hanuman, the windswept cliffs, and the unwavering persistence of life created a mystical and educational experience.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply someone seeking an offbeat adventure in Sri Lanka, Ussangoda is a place that will linger in your mind long after you've left.
The reddish soil faded from view as we drove away, but its mysterious charm stayed with me. Ussangoda, with its unusual landscape and timeless legends, is a testament to nature’s quirks and human imagination.
