About this Attraction

Located in Tokyo’s Taito district, Ueno Park (Ueno Koen) is one of Japan’s most beloved public parks, attracting over 10 million visitors annually. Originally part of the Kaneiji Temple grounds, built to spiritually protect Edo Castle, the area transformed into a public park after much of it was destroyed during the Boshin Civil War in 1868. Today, Ueno Park is a vibrant hub for culture, history, and nature, offering something for every visitor.

The park is home to some of Japan’s most significant museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. For wildlife lovers, Ueno Zoo, Japan's oldest zoo, houses a diverse collection of animals and remains a favourite attraction for families.

In the southern part of the park lies the picturesque Shinobazu Pond, inspired by Lake Biwa near Kyoto. The Bentendo Temple Hall sits at its centre, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection. The park also features the Kiyomizu Kannon Temple and Toshogu Shrine, both inspired by Kyoto’s historic architecture and dedicated to the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Perhaps most famously, Ueno Park is one of Tokyo’s premier cherry blossom spots. Every spring, over 1,000 cherry trees burst into bloom, attracting locals and tourists alike for hanami (flower viewing) picnics, creating a truly magical atmosphere under the blossoms.
