About this Attraction
The Tokugawa Art Museum and Tokugawa-en Garden offer a captivating glimpse into Japan’s feudal past and refined cultural heritage. Located in Nagoya, the museum stands on the historical grounds of the former residence of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the three most powerful branches of the ruling clan during the Edo Period (1603–1868). As one of the wealthiest domains of the time, the Owari Tokugawa family accumulated an impressive collection of cultural treasures, many of which are now preserved and showcased at the Tokugawa Art Museum. The museum houses an exceptional array of artifacts, including samurai armor and swords, Noh masks and costumes, tea ceremony utensils, poetry scrolls, ancient maps, and other priceless relics that reflect the elegance and sophistication of feudal Japan.
Adjacent to the museum is Tokugawa-en, a beautifully restored Japanese landscape garden centered around a large, tranquil pond. Once part of a retirement villa for the Owari lords, the original garden was destroyed during World War II but was meticulously reconstructed and reopened to the public in 2004. Today, visitors can stroll through its meandering paths, cross arched bridges, and enjoy peaceful moments in tea houses and rest pavilions. The garden is especially breathtaking in spring, when its Peony Garden bursts into color in mid to late April, and the Iris Garden follows in late May to early June. Autumn also offers a stunning display, as the maple trees blaze with red and gold hues in November. Together, the Tokugawa Art Museum and Tokugawa-en provide a serene and enriching experience, blending history, art, and nature in a setting that honors one of Japan’s most influential families.
