About this Attraction

Tokashiki Island (渡嘉敷島, Tokashiki-jima) is the largest of the Kerama Islands, located just 30–40 minutes by ferry from Okinawa’s capital, Naha. While it may not be as widely known as neighboring Zamami, Tokashiki offers an equally stunning blend of white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush green hills, making it a perfect destination for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts seeking a more relaxed escape.

The island is home to two main beaches—Aharen Beach and Tokashiku Beach—both of which are known for their calm, turquoise waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Colorful coral reefs are easily accessible right from the shore, and sea turtles are often spotted gliding gracefully in the shallows. Aharen Beach, the more popular of the two, features beachfront rental shops, local eateries, and accommodations ranging from guesthouses to small resorts.

Beyond the beach, Tokashiki’s interior is dominated by forested hills, offering a few scenic hiking trails and observation decks with panoramic views of the island and its neighboring islets. These trails are perfect for those looking to explore the island’s quieter, more natural side. Tokashiki is also part of the Kerama Shoto National Park, designated in 2014 to preserve the region’s exceptional biodiversity and marine ecosystem.

From January to March, the waters around Tokashiki become a prime spot for whale watching, as humpback whales migrate through the area. Guided boat tours provide up-close encounters with these gentle giants.

Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying overnight, Tokashiki Island delivers a well-balanced experience of relaxation, marine adventure, and scenic beauty. With fewer crowds than other islands in Okinawa, it’s an ideal retreat for those who want to unwind while staying connected to nature.
