About this Attraction

Nestled at the base of Mihintale, Vedahala stands as a testament to the advanced medical practices of ancient Sri Lanka. This remarkable hospital, established by King Sena II (853-887 AC), catered to the growing needs of the monks and devoted laymen in the area. As I wandered through the ruins, I deeply appreciated the ingenuity and compassion that went into creating this medical sanctuary over a millennium ago.

The Outer Courtyard

The journey into Vedahala begins at the outer courtyard, where four distinct rooms tell the story of ancient healthcare. The consulting room was where diagnoses were made, while the medicine preparation room hinted at the meticulous processes involved in creating remedies. Adjacent to these, the storage room for medicine once safeguarded valuable herbal concoctions. The final room, designated for hot water baths, offered a therapeutic retreat, showcasing the holistic approach to healing practised here.

Standing in these rooms, I could almost visualize the bustling activity of ancient physicians and patients. It was fascinating to see how every aspect of healthcare, from consultation to treatment, was thoughtfully organized.

The Principal Building and Central Courtyard

At the northern end of the outer courtyard lies the principal building, centred around a beautifully restored quadrangular courtyard. In the middle of this courtyard, a small shrine exudes an aura of tranquillity, reflecting the spiritual essence of ancient medicine.

The rooms surrounding the courtyard are arranged on a two-tiered platform, each facing the central shrine. These small yet functional spaces, measuring approximately 100 square feet each, served as private quarters for patients. The inner veranda connecting the rooms created a sense of openness and unity, allowing solitude and community healing.

Walking through the courtyard, I marvelled at the balance of architectural precision and spiritual intention. The design facilitated medical care and encouraged mental and emotional well-being.

A Holistic Healing Space

Vedahala is more than just an ancient hospital—it’s a testament to the advanced understanding of healthcare and spirituality in ancient Sri Lanka. The combination of medical facilities and a serene central shrine highlights the holistic approach to healing that focuses on the body, mind, and spirit.

Reflections on Vedahala

Visiting Vedahala was a profoundly enriching experience. The restored layout offers a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors to step into the shoes of those who walked these halls centuries ago. The thoughtfulness and care that went into creating this hospital are awe-inspiring, making Vedahala a historical landmark and a symbol of compassion and ingenuity.

For anyone exploring Mihintale, Vedahala is a must-visit site. It’s a place where history, spirituality, and medicine converge, offering a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
