The Tamozawa Imperial Villa (田母沢御用邸, Tamozawa Goyōtei) is a beautifully preserved former summer residence of the Japanese Imperial Family located in the scenic town of Nikko. Constructed in 1899, this villa uniquely blends the elegance of Edo-period architecture with the refined aesthetics of the Meiji era, offering a rare glimpse into Japan’s aristocratic lifestyle. Originally a Tokugawa family residence in Tokyo, parts of the building were relocated to Nikko and expanded into a summer retreat for the Emperor and his family. After falling into disrepair post-WWII, the villa underwent careful restoration and was opened to the public in 2000.

The villa is one of Japan’s most significant surviving wooden structures, featuring 106 rooms across a harmonious layout of corridors, courtyards, and drawing rooms. Visitors will find a striking blend of traditional Japanese elements, such as tatami floors and sliding paper doors, alongside Western influences, including crystal chandeliers and carpeted halls—a testament to Japan’s transitional era during the Meiji Restoration. Each room is thoughtfully preserved and accompanied by multilingual exhibits, making it accessible to domestic and international visitors.

Outside, the meticulously landscaped Japanese garden enhances the tranquil ambience of the villa. It features maple trees that come alive with vibrant red and gold foliage from late October to early November, making it a top autumn viewing spot. Though only one-third of the original estate remains, Tamozawa Imperial Villa is a cultural heritage site and historical museum today.
