About this Attraction

Founded on July 14, 1953, by a passionate group of ten university students, Shiki Theatre Natsu began as a revolutionary project aimed at transforming Japan’s theatrical landscape. Over the decades, this modest beginning has evolved into one of the largest and most influential theater companies in the country, boasting a workforce of over 1,300 members—including actors, technical staff, and management professionals. What sets Shiki apart is not only its scale but its mission: to decentralize cultural access and ensure that quality theater reaches audiences beyond Tokyo. In pursuit of this goal, the company operates eight independent theaters across Japan, each offering a dynamic calendar of live performances.

Every year, five to six productions are taken on tour nationwide, bringing the magic of theater to local communities while maintaining the high production standards for which Shiki is renowned. The theater company stages more than 3,000 performances annually, drawing an impressive audience of over 3 million people. Its diverse repertoire includes both original Japanese musicals and internationally acclaimed foreign works, often adapted thoughtfully for local audiences. From emotionally stirring dramas to vibrant family-friendly performances, the programming is designed to appeal to all generations.

Shiki Theatre Natsu has played a vital role in shaping modern Japanese theater, not only by delivering top-tier performances but also by nurturing talent and cultivating a new generation of performers and theatergoers. Whether you’re a longtime theater fan or a first-time visitor, a performance by Shiki promises world-class artistry, meaningful storytelling, and a strong sense of cultural outreach. Its legacy, rooted in grassroots ambition and fueled by creative excellence, continues to captivate audiences across Japan—making it a cornerstone of the nation’s performing arts scene.
