About this Attraction

Shayokan: Dazai Osamu Memorial Museum is a literary landmark located in Goshogawara, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. This historic building was constructed in 1907 by Tsushima Gen’emon, the father of renowned author Osamu Dazai, who spent part of his early childhood here. The mansion, built using Aomori's prized hinoki cypress, features a blend of traditional Japanese and Western architectural elements, including a grand staircase and spacious rooms. The residence encompasses 11 rooms on the first floor and 8 on the second, along with a Japanese garden and surrounding grounds totaling approximately 2,244 square meters. In 1998, the property was transformed into a memorial museum dedicated to Dazai's life and works. The name "Shayokan" is derived from Dazai's novel Shayō, meaning "setting sun," reflecting the author's introspective themes.

Visitors to Shayokan can explore exhibits showcasing Dazai's personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs, providing insight into his literary journey and the environment that influenced his writing. The museum also offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Tsushima family during the Meiji era. The tranquil Japanese garden and the preserved interior of the mansion create an immersive experience for those interested in Japanese literature and history.

Shayokan is located approximately a 7-minute walk from Kanagi Station on the Tsugaru Railway Line. The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last admission at 4:30 PM. It is closed on December 29. Admission fees are ¥600 for adults, ¥400 for high school and university students, and ¥250 for elementary and junior high school students. A combined ticket for Shayokan and the Tsugaru Shamisen Kaikan is available for ¥1,000 for adults, ¥600 for high school and university students, and ¥400 for elementary and junior high school students.
