About this Attraction

The Seven Virgins Mountain Range, or Saptha Kanya, is a mesmerising destination in Maskeliya, Sri Lanka. My visit to this picturesque mountain range was an unforgettable experience that combined natural beauty's awe with a deep reflection on its historical significance.

The Enchanting Natural Beauty of Saptha Kanya

Located in the Nuwara Eliya District, the Seven Virgins Mountain Range comprises seven distinct peaks, each exuding a unique charm. The tallest peak rises to an impressive 1,569 meters (5,148 feet), offering a commanding view of the surrounding landscapes.

As I began my journey, the mystical environment of the mountains captivated me. The peaks were often wrapped in a soft mist, creating an ethereal atmosphere that felt like stepping into a dream. The untouched beauty of the lush greenery and the crisp mountain air made the experience serene and rejuvenating.

The range lies above the Laxapana Hydro Power Plant, adding a fascinating environmental aspect to the visit. The natural water flow from these peaks feeds into this vital power source, showcasing the harmonious relationship between nature and human innovation.

The Historical Tragedy of 1974

While the natural splendour of the Seven Virgins Mountain Range is its most striking feature, the site also bears a sombre historical significance. On December 4, 1974, tragedy struck when Martinair Flight 138 crashed into the fifth peak of the range.

The devastating accident claimed the lives of all 191 people aboard, including 182 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims on their way to Mecca and nine crew members. Standing near the fifth mountain, I couldn’t help but reflect on this heartbreaking event, transforming the serene mountain range into a site of sorrow and remembrance.

Experiencing the Mystical Peaks

Exploring the trails of the Seven Virgins was an adventure in itself. The trails, though challenging, offered a rewarding trek for nature enthusiasts like me. The higher I climbed, the more I appreciated the intricate details of the flora and fauna that thrived in this pristine environment.

Reaching the vantage points, I was treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and forests. The sight of Laxapana Falls cascading in the distance added to the allure, making it a haven for photographers and nature lovers.

A Place of Reflection and Remembrance

As much as the Seven Virgins Mountain Range is a celebration of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, it is also a poignant reminder of the fragility of life. The locals I met during my visit shared stories of the 1974 air disaster, preserving the memory of those who perished. The range stands as a silent tribute to the lives lost, blending sorrow with the resilience of nature.
