About this Attraction

Senjogahara Marshland (戦場ヶ原, Senjōgahara) is one of the most scenic and ecologically rich areas in Nikko National Park. It is located at an elevation of 1,400 meters between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. Known for its vast open landscapes, highland flora, and seasonal beauty, Senjogahara offers some of the best hiking trails in the Kanto region and a refreshing escape from city life.

The Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail follows the winding Yukawa River from Yumoto Onsen down toward Ryuzu Waterfall, spanning approximately 6.5 kilometres and taking about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. Along the way, hikers are treated to expansive views of golden marsh grasses, distant mountains, and peaceful forest surroundings. The area becomes particularly magical in October, when the marshland becomes a tapestry of red, gold, and yellow hues, making it one of Nikko's top spots for autumn leaf viewing.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing become popular in winter when the trail is covered in snow. Equipment rentals and guided tours are available from the Sanbonmatsu parking area, though booking is recommended, and English-speaking guides may be limited. Senjogahara is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers of all levels. The flat trails are well-maintained and suitable for solo travellers and families, while nearby Odashirogahara Marshland offers a quieter, equally beautiful extension to your walk. With rich biodiversity, ever-changing scenery, and excellent accessibility from Nikko, Senjogahara Marshland is a year-round attraction that showcases Japan's highland natural and spiritual beauty.
