About This Activity

Kalpitiya, located in the Puttalam District on Sri Lanka’s northwest coast, is a rising star in scuba diving. Known primarily for its kite surfing scene, Kalpitiya is now gaining recognition among underwater enthusiasts for its untouched coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and thriving marine ecosystems. Just 170 km north of Colombo, this coastal town offers a tranquil escape with world-class diving experiences.

The highlight of scuba diving in Kalpitiya is the Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, the most extensive coral reef system in Sri Lanka, stretching over 300 square kilometres. Situated approximately 8 km offshore, Bar Reef is home to more than 150 species of coral and over 280 species of tropical fish. Divers often encounter reef sharks, manta rays, turtles, moray eels, and schools of colourful reef fish gliding through the vibrant coral landscape. The reef’s depth ranges between 1 and 20 meters, making it suitable for all skill levels—from beginners to certified divers.

Beyond Bar Reef, Kalpitiya is dotted with lesser-known but equally stunning dive sites such as St. Anne’s Reef, Unicorn Reef, Shantha’s Longer Reef, and Broken Anchor Reef. Each site offers unique experiences, including underwater caves, macro photography opportunities, and sightings of large pelagics like barracudas and trevallies.

The best time to dive in Kalpitiya is from November to April, when the sea is calm, currents are manageable, and visibility can exceed 20 meters. Several PADI-certified dive centres operate in the area, offering everything from Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) for first-timers to Open Water and Advanced courses for those seeking certification.

Dive packages typically range from $75 to $ 85 for two-tank dives, including boat transfers, full gear rental, and professional guidance. Small groups (3–5 divers per instructor) ensure a safe and personalised underwater experience.

In addition to diving, Kalpitiya is perfect for dolphin and whale watching, mangrove kayaking, and enjoying uncrowded beaches. Whether you’re a first-time diver or a seasoned explorer, scuba diving in Kalpitiya offers an unforgettable journey beneath Sri Lanka’s untouched waters, far from the crowded tourist trails.
