Sail a Maldivian Dhoni | Maldives
About This Activity
Exploring the Maldives aboard a traditional Dhoni boat was a dream come true. From the moment we set sail, the experience felt like a perfect escape into a tropical paradise, blending the vibrant marine life, stunning landscapes, and rich local culture.
Sailing Through Paradise
Starting in Malé, our journey on the traditional Dhoni—crafted with timeless Maldivian design—took us to pristine waters and unspoiled islands. With bright blue seas stretching endlessly, white sandy beaches fringed by palm trees became our daily backdrop. The gentle breeze and the sound of the waves created a serene ambience with which I quickly fell in love.
Each day brought a new adventure, from swimming with nurse sharks and manta rays to spotting dolphins dancing alongside our boat. Biyaadhoo Reef was a standout snorkelling spot, where I swam among green turtles and schools of colourful bannerfish and red-tooth triggerfish. Exploring the coral gardens near Maafushi was equally magical, with vibrant tabletop corals and oriental sweetlips completing the underwater symphony.
Connecting with Local Culture
One of the trip's highlights was immersing myself in the Maldivian way of life. A cooking demonstration showed us how to prepare traditional dishes like mas huni and Maldivian tuna curry—learning to combine fresh, local ingredients was fun and insightful.
Later, sipping tea at a locally owned café, I sampled freshly made Maldivian snacks, sharing laughs and stories with the welcoming locals. Their warmth and hospitality made this cultural encounter genuinely unforgettable.
Sunset Bliss and Music by the Beach
Evenings were equally enchanting. One night, we enjoyed a beachside dinner under the setting sun, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Bodu Beru and Langiri folk music. The drums’ hypnotic rhythm drew me into the lively dance with locals, a moment of pure joy and connection with the Maldivian spirit.
