About this Attraction

Ryuzu Waterfall (竜頭ノ滝, Ryūzu no Taki), meaning "Dragon Head Waterfall," is one of Nikko's most captivating natural wonders, nestled along the Yukawa River just before it flows into Lake Chuzenji. The waterfall earns its name from its unique rock formation that resembles a dragon's head, a sight that becomes especially dramatic during the autumn season. Surrounded by dense forest, the area bursts into brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, enhancing the mythical atmosphere. Ryuzu is one of the first places in Nikko to display autumn foliage due to its cooler, shaded location, making early October the ideal time to witness its full seasonal glory.

Visitors can enjoy a complimentary view of the waterfall from a cosy observation deck attached to a rest house offering a small souvenir shop and a food stand. This makes it a pleasant stop during a Nikko day trip. For those eager to explore more, a scenic walking trail runs about 300 meters upstream, offering stunning views of the river as it makes its way toward Lake Chuzenji. The trail continues beyond the falls, leading into the expansive Senjogahara Marshlands, a popular hiking area in the Nikko National Park.

Ryuzu Waterfall is easily accessible and incredibly photogenic, making it a favourite among nature lovers, photographers, and travellers seeking tranquillity. Whether you visit for the foliage, the dragon-like cascade, or as part of a broader Nikko adventure, Ryuzu Waterfall offers a magical, serene escape into nature's artistry—one that perfectly embodies the beauty of Japan's seasonal transitions.
