About this Attraction

Just a short drive from Tangalle in Sri Lanka's Hambantota district, Rekawa Mangrove Lagoon offers an incredible blend of serene beauty and ecological diversity. My journey began with a scenic ride through lush greenery, and as I arrived, the sight of the lagoon, surrounded by vibrant mangroves, left me in awe. The tranquil waterbody, spanning 2.4 km², is a hub of biodiversity and home to an intriguing ecosystem that seamlessly connects to the Indian Ocean.

A Day of Exploration

I started my adventure with a canoe ride, gliding through the narrow inland waterways that stretch over 3 kilometres. The mangroves encircling the lagoon create a serene, almost mystical ambience. Paddling through this natural haven, I spotted various bird species, colourful fish, and a water monitor gracefully navigating the shallows. The mangroves, teeming with life, gave me a sense of the delicate balance maintained in this unique ecosystem.

Understanding the Local Community

One of the highlights of my visit was learning about the local shrimp fishery. October to April is the shrimp fishing season, and I was fortunate to see the fishermen at work. Watching them cast their nets into the calm waters was fascinating. The prized white shrimp caught here is a significant source of livelihood for the community and is renowned for its taste. Speaking with the locals gave me insight into their fishing traditions and the lagoon's crucial role in their lives.

Getting There

Reaching Rekawa Lagoon was part of the adventure. From Colombo, the journey included a scenic drive along the Southern Expressway, followed by a picturesque route through local villages. The final stretch on Rekawa Road revealed glimpses of the lagoon, heightening my anticipation. For those starting in Tangalle, the drive is even shorter and as beautiful.

Why Rekawa Lagoon Stands Out

What sets Rekawa Lagoon apart is its ability to offer natural beauty and a deep connection to the local way of life. The mangroves are visually stunning and vital for maintaining the area's ecological balance. The lagoon’s calm waters and vibrant biodiversity make it perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and bird-watching. It’s also a haven for nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat.

Final Thoughts

Rekawa Lagoon was more than just a visit; it was an immersive experience. The combination of natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and community interaction made it unforgettable. Whether you're an adventure enthusiast, a bird-watching aficionado, or someone looking for tranquillity, Rekawa Lagoon offers something unique. I left with a newfound appreciation for this ecological treasure and the harmonious relationship between nature and the local community.
