About this Attraction

When I first stepped into the serene surroundings of Pothgul Vehera, also known as Pothgul Viharaya, located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa, I was struck by its quiet elegance. The site, known as the oldest library complex in Sri Lanka, truly felt like a place where wisdom once thrived. The name "Pothgul," meaning a place to store books, instantly sparked curiosity about its historical significance.

Historical Insights

Dating back to the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great (1153–1185 AD), Pothgul Vehera is believed to have been a centre for storing ancient texts and manuscripts. The restoration efforts by Queen Chandrawathi, a spouse of the king, further highlight its importance as a cultural and educational hub of that era. It’s humbling to imagine the monks who once lived here dedicating their lives to preserving knowledge and spiritual practices.

Architectural Beauty

What captivated me the most was the central circular structure, presumed to be the main library. Made entirely of bricks, this building showcases intricate craftsmanship. The circular roof, constructed with bricks, adds to its unique architectural appeal. Surrounding the central structure are four miniature stupas at the corners of the rectangular platform, creating a balanced and harmonious design. It felt as though every corner of this ancient site whispered stories of the past.

Monastic Life

The site also houses remnants of several residential chambers, or "awasa," where monks lived. Walking through these areas, I could almost envision the lives of the monks—immersed in study and meditation amidst the tranquil surroundings.

A Journey Through Time

Visiting Pothgul Vehera was like stepping back into a time when learning and spiritual growth were paramount. The combination of historical significance, an architectural wonder, and the serene ambience made it an unforgettable experience. It’s a place where the echoes of ancient wisdom still linger, inspiring awe and reverence for Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.
