Journey to Peacock Hill
My adventure started with a scenic drive from Kandy along the A5 road toward Pussellawa. The journey took me past lush tea plantations, quaint villages, and the picturesque Kotmale Dam. Choosing the route via Doragala villages, I arrived near the trailhead, where the hike truly began.
The trail to Peacock Hill is well-trodden and relatively easy, winding through serene pine forests. The hike took about 30 minutes and was a pleasant escape into nature: the cool breeze and birds chirping added to the experience's tranquillity.
Reaching the Summit
As I reached the summit, the views left me awestruck. Standing at an elevation of 1,518 meters, Peacock Hill offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding region. Gampola, Pussellawa, and Nuwara Eliya towns were visible, along with the majestic Kotmale Reservoir glistening under the sun.
One of the highlights was spotting waterfalls like Ramboda and Poona Oya cascading gracefully through the mountains, with Ambuluwawa and the iconic Bible Rock standing tall in the distance. It felt like being at the heart of a natural masterpiece.
The Historical Connection
What made the experience even more enriching was the historical significance of Peacock Hill. I learned that Prince Gemunu, later known as the legendary King Dutugemunu, had sought refuge in the nearby village of Kotagepitiya during a pivotal chapter of his life. Walking these trails felt like stepping back in time, imagining the young prince herding his poultry and finding solace in the mountains.
