About this Attraction

Peacock Hill, or "Monaragala," as locals call it, holds a special charm in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka. As an avid nature lover and hiker, visiting this unique destination blended history, adventure, and stunning vistas. The hill's name stems from its resemblance to a peacock when viewed from afar—a fascinating feature that becomes more apparent once you're atop the rocky summit.

Journey to Peacock Hill

My adventure started with a scenic drive from Kandy along the A5 road toward Pussellawa. The journey took me past lush tea plantations, quaint villages, and the picturesque Kotmale Dam. Choosing the route via Doragala villages, I arrived near the trailhead, where the hike truly began.

The trail to Peacock Hill is well-trodden and relatively easy, winding through serene pine forests. The hike took about 30 minutes and was a pleasant escape into nature: the cool breeze and birds chirping added to the experience's tranquillity.

Reaching the Summit

As I reached the summit, the views left me awestruck. Standing at an elevation of 1,518 meters, Peacock Hill offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding region. Gampola, Pussellawa, and Nuwara Eliya towns were visible, along with the majestic Kotmale Reservoir glistening under the sun.

One of the highlights was spotting waterfalls like Ramboda and Poona Oya cascading gracefully through the mountains, with Ambuluwawa and the iconic Bible Rock standing tall in the distance. It felt like being at the heart of a natural masterpiece.

The Historical Connection

What made the experience even more enriching was the historical significance of Peacock Hill. I learned that Prince Gemunu, later known as the legendary King Dutugemunu, had sought refuge in the nearby village of Kotagepitiya during a pivotal chapter of his life. Walking these trails felt like stepping back in time, imagining the young prince herding his poultry and finding solace in the mountains.

Tips for Future Explorers

  1. Getting There: The drive from Kandy takes about an hour, but if you prefer a more adventurous route, try crossing the Kotmale Dam.
  2. Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon is perfect for clear skies and mesmerizing views.
  3. What to Bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, water, a hat, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.
  4. Stay Safe: Although the hike is easy, staying on marked trails and avoiding the edges of the summit is essential.

Why Peacock Hill is a Must-Visit

Peacock Hill combines natural beauty, historical intrigue, and accessibility, making it a gem for hikers and history enthusiasts alike. The blend of serene landscapes, panoramic views, and cultural significance ensures a rewarding experience for anyone venturing to this hilltop haven.

For me, this visit was more than just a hike—it was a journey through Sri Lanka's captivating heritage and untouched wilderness.
