About this Attraction

Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja) is a fascinating and historically significant Shinto shrine in Kanazawa, dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the founding lord of the influential Maeda Clan. Initially constructed in 1599 on Mount Utatsu, the shrine was later relocated to its current central location, just a short distance from Kanazawa Castle. It stands today not only as a religious site but also as a tribute to Kanazawa’s feudal heritage.

What sets Oyama Shrine apart is its unusual main gate, which blends Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural elements. Designed by a Dutch architect, the three-story gate includes traditional Asian influences on the lower floors, while the top level features stained glass windows—a rare sight at a Japanese shrine. This top floor once served as a lighthouse, making the gate both artistic and functional. Interestingly, the gate originally served as the entrance to Kanazawa Castle before being moved to the shrine.

Within the grounds, visitors can view a statue of Lord Toshiie and stroll through a serene garden with ponds, arched bridges, and landscaping shaped like musical instruments. This tranquil garden provides an ideal setting for taking photos, meditating, or taking a short walk.

Oyama Shrine is located in the heart of Kanazawa and is easily accessible on foot from Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle, and Nagamachi Samurai District. With no entrance fee, it makes for a peaceful and enriching cultural stop on any Kanazawa itinerary—perfect for both casual tourists and those interested in the fusion of East and West in Japanese history.
