About this Attraction

The Okama Crater, often referred to as the "Five Color Pond" due to its ever-changing hues, is a spectacular volcanic caldera nestled at the summit of Mount Zao in the Zao Mountain Range, straddling the border of Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures in Japan’s Tohoku region. This mesmerizing crater lake is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in northern Japan and draws countless visitors for its surreal beauty, dynamic landscape, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range.

Formed by a volcanic eruption in the 18th century, the Okama Crater measures approximately 360 meters in diameter and 27 meters deep. Its name, "Okama," literally means "cooking pot," a reference to the bowl-like shape of the lake. What makes the crater especially captivating is its vivid turquoise-green water, which changes color depending on the weather, sunlight, and mineral content—ranging from deep blue to emerald green. The vibrant lake, surrounded by stark volcanic rock, stands out dramatically against the rugged backdrop of Mount Zao, making it a favorite destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Access to the crater is available from spring to early fall, typically between late April and early November, as the area becomes inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall. The Zao Echo Line, a scenic mountain road, offers a breathtaking drive to the Zao High Line, a toll road that leads directly to the Okama viewing platform. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Pacific Ocean to the east and the surrounding peaks of the Zao range.

The Zao Mountain Range itself is a volcanic chain known for its dynamic terrain, geothermal activity, and year-round appeal. In winter, the region transforms into a snow-covered wonderland famous for “snow monsters”—trees completely coated in snow and ice due to freezing winds from Siberia. This unique phenomenon, best seen at the Zao Onsen Ski Resort, adds to the mountain’s allure as a four-season destination.

Whether you're drawn by the surreal beauty of the Okama Crater, the rugged hiking trails of Zao, or the rejuvenating hot springs of nearby Zao Onsen, the region offers a perfect blend of natural wonder, adventure, and relaxation. It is an essential stop for any traveler exploring the Tohoku region.
