About this Attraction

Although not genuinely connected to historical ninja, Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺)—popularly known as Ninjadera (Ninja Temple)—is one of Kanazawa’s most fascinating and mysterious attractions. Built in the Edo Period by the powerful Maeda lords, the temple served as a secret military outpost disguised as a Buddhist place of worship. Due to strict building regulations imposed by the Tokugawa shogunate, the temple was cleverly engineered with hidden defences to circumvent surveillance and protect against enemies.

What makes Ninjadera unique are its ingenious architectural traps and illusions. Visitors will encounter a maze of narrow staircases, trapdoors, secret rooms, and labyrinthine corridors, all designed to confuse and delay intruders. Some passageways lead to nowhere, while others hide escape tunnels reportedly used to send messages to Kanazawa Castle in the event of attack. It’s a rare and interactive glimpse into how samurai-era defence tactics were hidden in plain sight.

Entry to the temple is by guided tour only, primarily in Japanese, but English guidebooks are available and helpful. Tours offer a thrilling exploration of the building’s intricate layout and military strategy, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.

Located in the Teramachi District—Kanazawa’s historic “temple town” area in the south—the temple is surrounded by other traditional religious structures, giving visitors a more profound sense of the city’s Edo-period planning and atmosphere.

A visit to Ninjadera is not just about architecture, but about uncovering secrets—one step, one trapdoor, one hidden room at a time.
