Finding the Hidden Entrance

The journey to Nil Diya Pokuna began along the Wellawaya Road, passing the magnificent Ravana Falls. After travelling 3 km, I reached the 10th-mile post at Karandagolla and turned towards Bandarawela.

Finding the entrance wasn’t straightforward—it’s not a well-marked tourist spot. Fortunately, the friendly local villagers guided me through an alternative hidden path, leading me through a tranquil grove beneath the road. As I followed the trail, my anticipation grew—this wasn’t just another cave; it was the largest underground cave discovered in Sri Lanka.

Descending into the Depths

Standing at the cave entrance, I could feel my heart pounding with excitement and nervousness. The entrance was a narrow tunnel resembling a passage to an underground world.

This wasn’t a casual stroll—it was a challenging descent. The path was steep and slippery, with narrow passageways and wet cliff edges. I had been advised never to attempt this alone, so I was grateful to have an experienced guide.
