About this Attraction

Visiting the Nelligala International Buddhist Center was a truly soulful experience. It offers a perfect retreat from the hectic pace of everyday life. Established in 2015, this temple is perched atop Nelligala hill in Muruthalawa, Kandy. It radiates peace, spirituality, and breathtaking beauty.

The Journey to Nelligala Temple

Starting my journey from Pilimatalawa, I followed the Muruthalawa Road, passing lush greenery, tea plantations, and the scenic Kurugama Tea Factory. The drive was calming, with the misty hills of Kandy unfolding at every turn. Alternatively, I learned that the route from Kiribathkumbura along Nelligala Road offers equally picturesque views, making the journey part of the spiritual experience.

As I reached the hilltop, the cool breeze, crisp air, and the panoramic views of the Knuckles Mountain Range and Alagalla welcomed me. The surroundings whispered a promise of serenity—and it certainly delivered.

First Impressions: Golden Serenity Against Blue Skies

Stepping into Nelligala Temple, I was immediately struck by the architectural magnificenceShimmering under the sun, the golden stupa stood tall against the deep blue sky, creating a stunning contrast that calmed my soul.

With its imposing yet peaceful presence, the Mahayana Buddha statue was a sight to behold. Gleaming in gold, it felt like the Buddha was watching over the hills, blessing all who visited.

Moments of Reflection by the Golden Bo Tree

I was drawn to the golden Bo treewhich was carefully placed in a golden bowl and represented the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Sitting there, gazing at the skyline merging with the clouds, I felt a sense of stillness I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

The viewpoint near the Bo tree offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding hills, lakes, and forests—a reminder of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, perfectly blending with the temple's spiritual ambience.

Meditation and Spiritual Rejuvenation

The meditation hall at Nelligala provided an ideal space to pause and reflect. The soft chanting in the background and the gentle mountain breeze made it the perfect atmosphere for mindfulness.

Even for someone like me, who only occasionally practices meditation, this place made it effortless to connect with inner peace. The quietude, combined with the temple's spiritual vibrations, made me completely forget the outside world.

Architectural Elegance with Spiritual Depth

Every structure at Nelligala Temple reflected Sri Lankan Buddhist architecture at its finest. From the intricate carvings on the temple walls to the stunning murals depicting scenes from Lord Buddha’s life, every detail had a story to tell.

The clean marble floors, well-maintained gardens, and minimalist surroundings added to the tranquil vibe. It felt like the temple was designed as a place of worship and a sanctuary for the soul.

Nature’s Embrace at Nelligala

What made the experience even more special was the seamless blend of spirituality and nature. With the Wasgamuwa National Forest visible in the distance and the Amban River glistening far below, Nelligala offered views that refreshed the mind and healed the spirit.

The birds singing in the early hours and the soft mist rolling in during the evening made me feel like I were in a sacred world of peace and purity.

A Place Alive with Festivals and Culture

Though my visit was quiet, I learned that Nelligala Temple becomes even more vibrant during Vesak and other Buddhist celebrations. The lights, lanterns, and devotional chants create an atmosphere of unity and spiritual reflection, bringing together people from all walks of life.

Reflections from My Visit

As I left Nelligala, I felt a deep sense of calm. This wasn’t just a visit to a temple—it was a journey of self-reflection, a reminder of the simple beauty in stillness and the profound peace in mindfulness.

Whether you’re looking for a spiritual retreat, a breathtaking view, or a place to pause and breathe, Nelligala International Buddhist Center is a must-visit.
