About this Attraction

During my visit to Malé, I explored the National Museum of the Maldives, a place that beautifully encapsulates the island nation's rich cultural and historical tapestry. Nestled within Sultan Park, the museum was a captivating destination I couldn’t miss.

Learning the History

Before heading in, I stopped at the information centre nearby, where a helpful guide provided insights about the museum’s past. It was inaugurated on November 11, 1952, during the Maldives' National Day celebrations. This historical treasure trove was built to preserve the Maldivian legacy and inspire patriotism among its people.

The guide also mentioned that the museum had undergone a significant transformation when a new building, funded by the Chinese government, was opened on July 26, 2010, coinciding with Maldives' Independence Day.

Architectural Highlights

Walking through its halls, I marvelled at the blend of history and design. The older section of the museum, housed in a part of the 17th-century Royal Palace compound, retained the charm of the Sultanate days. The beautifully engraved Qur'anic scriptures on the walls and the intricate details within the structure spoke volumes about its historical importance.

The newer building stood as a modern contrast, yet it complemented the legacy it aimed to preserve. This duality of architectural styles made my visit even more fascinating.

Exploring the Collections

Inside, the museum's exhibits transported me through time. Each piece told a story, from ancient coral stone carvings and Buddhist relics to artefacts of the Islamic monarchs. The royal attire, particularly the intricate Feyli Kolhu of Sultan Ghaazee Mohammed Thakurufaanu, left me in awe of the craftsmanship and artistry of ancient Maldives.

The museum also showcased tools, ceremonial objects, coins, and lacquered items, giving me a glimpse into the daily lives of the Maldivian people from different eras. Unfortunately, I learned that much of the pre-Islamic collection was destroyed during an attack in 2012—a poignant reminder of the fragility of history.

Practical Information

The museum operates from 10 am to 4 pm, making it a perfect mid-morning or afternoon destination. However, it remains closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s best to plan accordingly.

My Reflection

Walking through the museum, I felt a deep connection to the Maldives' journey through history. It wasn’t just about the artefacts—it was about understanding the stories of a nation that has thrived amidst the Indian Ocean for centuries. My visit to the National Museum of the Maldives was not just an educational experience; it was a heartfelt journey into the soul of a nation.
